[Boatanchors] Another BA followed me home

Hi Gary,

Yes, the receiver was part of the equipment in the "Chart Room" aboard
a merchant vessel. It was on a shelf up high but reachable for tuning. It
provided the officers and crew access to the broadcast band and high
frequencies. The audio output was piped to the officers saloon and
down to the crew mess. There the loudspeakers had an attenuator
so the volume could be adjusted there. A monitor speaker was
provided at the receiver.
I sailed during the latter part of WW2 as radio operator. On one trip,
the receiver "quit - dead". The captain asked if I would look at it.
Fortunately we had 3 operators, so I got the second operator to help
me get that monster down from that high shelf.
Turned out a small button ceramic condenser in the front end oscillator
had shorted, no front end mixing oscillations, no I.F. signal. We had
no such spare on board so I simply made a "gimmick", taking two
short pieces of insulated hookup wire and hooked them up and by
twisting them together more or less, I got the tiny capacitance it
needed.
Brings back memories!
Take care,

Ken N5CM
