I have an old Sony open reel machine that uses both
tubes and transistors, sort of in keeping with the
boatanchor spirit.  It is fairly compact, but not as
small as those cheap portables that used 3" reels.

Many of those small units did not have a capstan so
not only was the tape speed poorly regulated, but also
was non-constant from one end of the reel to the
other.  They were not suited to music reproduction.

Contact me if you are interested in the Sony (which
does have a capstan).
