Ron,
Do not use WD40 for this application.
This question also comes up often in the R390 reflector.
Many of the slugs are set in bees wax. A good warming with the hair dryer
will often warm them up and you can get them loose. The hair dryer can be
turned off before every thing is melted down.
A few drops of goo gone and let it stand for an hour or over night will some
times
soften the crud enough to get the slug loose.
A plastic hex tool can be dipped in crazy glue and placed into a cracked slug.
Practice the insertion a couple times before applying the glue. File the
plastic if needed
to fit into the cracked slug. Let that set until the glue dries good. This
will hold the slug parts together and you can get it out. The glue will break
free from the wax in the fiber tube.
Wait for all the mail to come in before you try anything.
