[Boatanchors] Old HRO receivers

I was reading a book about English communications intercept during
the early days of WW-II.  Says that a committee decided that none
of their receivers were up to the task, and that the American HRO
was the most suitable.  I wonder what kind of receivers they were
using previously and why the HRO was so much better.  And what model
of HRO would that be?
