[Boatanchors] Meter Glass

My recollection when I last had glass made, was that a nearby glass shop
that does installations and repairs on windows and NOT NEW WINDOWS, had in
stock the right glass and cut it for me for 2 or 3 dollars total.

If by chance you have a hard time finding the right glass where you are, go
to the equivalent of the old "Five and Dime Store" - Big Lots, Dollar
Stores, even Target and the like - and buy a cheap picture frame, after
checking to make sure that the glass is the right thickness. If your meter
by chance requires (probably non Collins) thinner glass than you can get at
the local glass shop, cheap picture frames are your best place to find what
you need.

While you have the meter disassembled and the shell off it, check if it used
to have or still has remnants of white paint inside the shell to spread the
illumination better. Clean off the old stuff and paint it before you put in
the glass and let it dry well in the hot sun. If the brass ring piece
doesn't fit tightly to press against the glass you can sometime reform it
and otherwise you can tack it with some Duco cement or the equivalent. Be
careful to keep if off the part of the glass that is visible.

Of course, clean the glass well and keep your fingers off it when you
install it.

It should look like a new meter and the 45 or more years of grime and
household cooking fumes and nicotine (UGH!) that was deposited on the glass
will be gone!
