All: I have added 3-wire cords to a Valiant, an R-390A, a Heath HP-23A, and
a  Drake AC-4, as well as a couple of commercial sets.  I know it's no
longer "original" after I do that, but that's not as important to me as my
continued health.  I'm not going to care how original it is if I get hurt or
killed with it.

It's also a good idea to check the ground pins with an ohmmeter from time to
time, particularly if the cord is pulled on a lot.  I remember an X-ray from
a while back clearly showing the pulled-loose ground pin in a molded cable.
I don't think that's very common with quality merchandise, but it doesn't
hurt to check.
