Try sticking it in the freezer if you think that the metal has a
bigger thermal coefficient of expansion than the bakelite, or in a
150-degree oven if you think the metal will expand less than the
bakelite. Shrinking the metal (or expanding the bakelite) will give
more room for the threads to loosen and move, and may help you.

A report on how you actually get it to work loose will be of use to
many of us.
