[Boatanchors] Anyone remember Tubesters?

Hi all,

Back a good many years ago, I bought a Collins S line pair from a friend.
It was in good shape, I used it and loved it, and regret getting rid of
it.

In place of many or most of the vacuum tubes were plastic solid state
assemblies called 'Tubesters". These were approx the same size of the
tube they were to replace, and had pins on a standard base, so you could
just plug them in and they worked.

I had the receiver tunes to a gnat's behind before putting the Tubesters
back in. It tuned easily and was a typical Collins tuneup.

I then put the Tubesters back in, ran another alignment and found
essentially no change. The thing worked fine with those Tubesters.

I'm just wondering what the story was on them? I don't recall ever seeing
a mention of them in any way before or since.

Can anyone shed any light on these things, and comments?

Tks .... Steve WA3SWS
