I had an ARC-4 that I used for Civil Air Patrol work back in the late 
1950s.  I remember building a cascode preamplifier for it and putting
it in place of the guard channel receiver - that radio had provision
for a separate fixed-frequency front end for the guard channel in addition
to the four channels that it otherwise tuned.  And the four had to be
pretty close together, as unlike the SCR-522 it didn't have any provision
for tuning the RF stages separately for each channel.

Then there were also the VHF components made for the ARC-5...
