Dave -

Also don't forget the inductive "kick" generated by the huge inductance 
of the mod transformer secondary.  The only time I ever arc'd over a 
Millen HV connector was when I keyed a Globe King 500 after the relay 
that (is supposed to) short the mod transformer secondary for CW 
operation.!!  Like a rifle shot without earplugs!

And, once a connector or other insulator is arc'd, a carbon track often 
forms, sometimes internally, that provides a tempting path for even 
lower voltages.
