Hi All,
A couple of days ago I drove up to "Sack-a-tomatoes" (Sacramento) and had a
nice visit with another member of this list. Purpose of the trip was to
pick up an SP-600 receiver that I'd bought from him. I must say, this
gentleman has a very nice collection of radios, some in racks, others on
tables. They are mostly military surplus of one sort or another, and MOST
were turned on and operating (apparently he leaves them on 24/7). Needless
to say, even though it was a winter day the good sized room was pleasantly
"warm".
Anyway, the SP-600 that came home with me is one that I'd sold him a year or
two back. It plays nicely, but will get the tubes and alignment checked
before putting it in the listening position! At least this is ONE radio
that I won't have to re-cap and totally overhaul <grin>.
A couple of other boatanchors also road home in the back seat of the pickup
(it was threatening rain). These are National NC-188's. One looks quite
nice as is, the other will need more TLC as the cabinet has a couple "extra"
small holes on both sides along with missing chrome strips (no, the holes
aren't for the strips, it looks like something was mounted to the radio).
Both are supposed to work, but my "boatanchor acquisition policy" is "no set
gets powered up until it has been thoroughly checked out, paper caps
replaced and filter capacitors at LEAST reformed (and usually replaced)".
All this beats having to replace the power tranny.
As there is a friends R-390A presently sitting on the work table it will be
some time before the NC-188's get much if any TLC.
