My previous bench was 24" deep and it was a nightmare.  By the 
time I had something like an NC-173 or a Philco 37-610 on it, 
there was no room for test equipment.  With the 36" depth, the 
farthest 12" is dedicated to test equipment leaving 24" of work space.
