[Boatanchors] How far to clean up a rig?

Let's say you've bought a rig in reasonably good shape that appears original 
and is 50 years old. It's dirty and in need of recapping, power plug, and 
alignment, but you don't want to do a complete restoration. What all would 
you clean and replace, and what would you use to clean various sections?
