Hi Ken,
The manual covering the 33 and the upgraded 34 (uses a pair of 6BA6
in place of 6SK7) is on BAMA.
Any green on the eye tube at all? If no magnetic pull on the speaker,
check for B+ on both sides of field coil. If B+ on both sides and no
low ohms short, check why no power draw (need a load to get
magnetism). Is output transformer primary open? Is output tube
getting voltage at plate and proper voltage at cathode resistor?
(Dead tube shows voltage at plate but not cathode.)
I repaired a 33 before getting a manual copy. The unit is a
dirt-simple dual TRF, detector and audio amp. Suggest replacing all
the 0.01 and other wax caps, starting with the coupling cap to the
6K6 input grid. Cheap ceramic caps make good replacements.
Nice tool when repairs completed. NRI also made a Conar 230 kit much
later. I believe the manual to the 33-34 shows 1947 as date. I'm
guessing the 230 to be late 1950's. Its manual is also on BAMA and is
an excellent guide to signal tracing.
Both the 33/34 and the 230 are fun to play with and use as test gear.
Both are decent and sensitive TRF radios all by themselves. The 33/34
covers shortwave also and is in the best tradition of the Rider and
Meissner signal tracers as TRF sets.
My 33 is pictured at
