[Boatanchors] Speaker Cabinets

Hi, all. Seems that I spend more time talking about boatanchors these days
than I do working with (or, on) boatanchors. That brings me to my current
query. My hamfest buddy and I were discussing the 'great sound' provided by
NC300's and other receivers of that era, and, I made the comment that I
wondered how much of the great sound we remember was due to the active
devices, i.e., the tubes, of those receivers and how much could be
attributed to the large speaker cabinets we used back in 'the day.' Which,
of course, got me to thinking...wonder how much today's rigs could benefit
from something along the lines of a Hallicrafters R48 or similar?
So...not wishing to reinvent the wheel, I am on a quest for speaker cabinet
design info. The woodworking is not a problem - I have the tools and
skills. But, what design parameters have y'all already considered and
incorporated in your own 'perfect' speaker? What worked - what didn't?
What size speaker(s)?
I'd appreciate any input any of you can provide. Please respond off the
reflector, directly to my email address. If there's any interest, I'll
summarize the info and post a summary to the reflector.
