Again... thanks Andy,

I can explain the presence of the two tubes in the R-1051 receivers.   
Their purpose is to protect the receiver from extremely large  
electromagnetic pulses, such as those caused by the detonation of a  
nuclear weapon or an electronic warfare weapon.  This design was used  
in almost all soviet receivers which were analyzed when a MIG pilot  
defected along with his aircraft years ago.
