Pete nailed it here.
A.K.A. 'Plug 'n Play then Throw Away'. Sorta like the folks who use
disposable paper plates so they don't have to wash dishes. (o:
Which answers Vic's questions clearly: No. Why would anyone want to
restore some mass produced, throw away piece of equipment whose
firmware will be obsolete and unsupported in a matter of years, maybe
months? Afterall, the 'technology' that Pete refers to is all inside a
widdew chippy thing. Just like your microwave, cell phone, or toaster.
And some folks wonder where the term 'Appliance Operator' came from?
Here's a bold idea: let's make ham radio MORE like a cell phone or the
internet and less like 'radio'. That will bring in new 'operators' for
sure.
OTOH, you can still find and acquire real radios that you can not only
find parts for, but you can actually get inside and fix with your
hands and a few hand tools. Tubes, capacitors, resistors, still
available. Transformers can be rewound. Wonderful transmitters from 50
or more years ago can still be made to operate just fine for
communications on today's frequencies, as intended. Bob's work and the
work of many others is a testament to what radio was about and, IMHO,
should still be about. Not specifically a mode or a technology, more
along the lines of the spirit of what it's all about.
That's not to say that current equipment won't get preserved, it will.
Like cars, folks will collect and do their best to restore and
maintain them for the future. And like the old car hobby, the most
interesting examples will be the ones that please the crowds as well
as attracting the initial effort. After all, how much fun is there in
restoring a mass produced paper plate?
