Duane, much of what you say is true including: that eBay is almost exclusively a
machine. It's part of the genius of their business model. Virtually no employees,
and the money just comes in.

But, machines break down. The mark of a good operation is not how they respond when
things are going right, but when things go wrong. In my experience, eBay ignores the
problem and makes it virtually impossible to complain to someone in authority.

What really galls me is their slogan 'eBay is a safe place to trade' which is
blatantly not true.

As to your claim that nearly half of the transactions go bad, that's not in accord
with my experience. I'd put the number at under 1%. BUT, eBay's failure rate at
fixing those problems approaches 100 %.
