I tried to thin the acryllic paint (it is water based)
to use with my Wagner gun.  It tended to streak.  I
now just put the unthinned paint in the cup and it
works fine.  You do have to carefully adjust the paint
flow so that enough makes it through the gun but not
enough to go on too thick.
