These were very cheap and available in the '50's.  I remember visiting a 
local ham shack in 1957 and the fellow demonstrated his 19 -- it was his 
main rig!  He made a QSO on CW, and then called CQ fruitlessly for a 
while on AM.  It had a real "woooooop de woooooooooop" chirp on CW.  I 
believe that they cost about $25 in unused condition back then.
