I you are really wanting "hi fi" audio from a
communications receiver after getting the i.f. stages
"widened out" you can connect the output of the
detector stage to an external hf-fi audio amplifier. 
I have found such at garage sales for like $5
including those with built in AM/FM tuners, record
players, tape decks, etc.

Using that along with a "hi-fi" speaker (like $1 to $2
a pair at garage sales) you will have a much better
sounding receiver than trying to rebuild the audio
output section and it is like a 5 minute reversable modification.
