[Boatanchors] Speckled aluminum?

Hi all,

I'm servicing an Eico 221 VTVM that arrived yesterday (I've been needing 
a VTVM).  This one has the typical "speckled" aluminum front panel that 
I've seen on so much Eico test gear.  I believe that the "speckles" are 
little spots of corrosion in the aluminum.

Is there a way to improve the appearance of these "Eico" panels WITHOUT 
damaging the silk screened labels in the process?

I also received a URM-25D signal generator, "sans lid" that will be a 
future project!  I want to research that one a little before working on 
it (it's been awhile since I last serviced one of those).
