Hi Ed - from my car travels in Mexico, I have never seen one. While
driving around in Mazatlan a couple of years ago, I saw a sign that said
"Radio Partes" amongst a bunch of car stereo shops. I went in and the
proprietor was XE2AIA. Talked to him for about 30 minutes about ham
radio. He was no longer active on the radio and he told me his shop was
not long for this world as people no longer repaired anything. That is
closest I have come to a radio/surplus store. When I mentioned
boatanchors, he told me he still had a Hallicrafters S-40B and a
homebrew linear amplifier made from surplus 813's and stuff.
I have driven to Mazatlan which is 950 miles from Phoenix and have not
seen anything and have driven to Cabo San Lucas twice at the tip of Baja
and never saw anything in La Paz which is the only big city in Southern
Baja. My suggestion - forget about boatanchors and enjoy the sun, sand
surf, great food and nice people. You might want to operate from where
your going if you want to spend $90 for a 3-6 month permit. I have
obtained my temporary license for Mexico 7 times in the past 8 years and
have had fun operating from the resort hotels in Mazatlan and Cabos San
Lucas and operating mobile when I drove down the Baja.
Buena Suerte (good luck) y 73,
