The 83 is a mecury vapor rectifier and will glow blue when in operation.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Type 83 tube as a rectifier

I have been trying to get a WW II Battery charger to operate. One
circuit used a Tungar bulb and the other used a Type 83 rectifier tube.
When I applied power, I get several blue flashes in the Type 83 tube. Is
this normal for a Type 83? The tube still lights up so the filament is
OK.

TIA,

Bill Howard
