Synchronous AM detection is an example of a detector that uses both upper and
lower sidebands... two outputs are available - all stuff in-phase with the
carrier and all things 90-degrees out of phase. Matrix those signals with an
appropriate phase shift network and you get selectable upper or lower sideband
audio. See my materials at http://www.qsl.net/wd8das/ specifically
http://www.qsl.net/wd8das/sync.html

Can be used with full carrier DSB (AM) or reduced carrier DSB or SSB. Best
readily available example of this technology is the Sony ICF-2010 receiver
(ICF-2001D in some areas of the world).
