Dale, I'm not familiar with the ranger but the 5100b has mains voltage 
available on a n.o. set of relay contacts. When the rig is keyed it closes 
the relay contacts and makes the mains voltage available for a dow key type 
tx/rx relay coil. Bottom line The ac voltage is usually used for 
switching  tx/rx through a dow key relay (115vac) coil.
