Night and day!
The 51J3 has a more accurate dial and doesn't drift.
You do have to "crank" through more turns of the
bandswitch.
I have a 51J2 and have owned two SP-600-JX-17 units.
In my mind the 51J series is head and shoulders above
the SP-600. Both of my SP-600s drifted considerably
especially on the higher frequencies.
Now, the SP-600 does go higher in frequency than the
51J series. But, unless you elither have an FM
adapter of you slope detect there isn't that much in
the 30 MHz to 50 MHz range. On 6 meters the SP-600
drifts enought that it is very difficult to keep an
SSB station tuned in. At least that is my experience
with not only my two SP-600 units but with others that
I have serviced over the years.

Anyone have an opinion in comparing a Collins 51J3 /
R388 with a hammarlund sp600 for general use?
