I have both and usually use the SP-600.  It's just more fun to use
for band cruising.  I'll use the '388 when I want to listen to a fixed 
frequency and don't mind the more restricted audio.  For just tuning 
around to hear what's on, the tuning on the SP-600 is a pleasure to use.

With good band conditions and no adjacent channel interference, 
widening out the SP-600's IF to its 13 Kc wide setting really makes 
AM signals sound good.

Finally, it's possible that my '388 could use some work but I do find 
that my SP-600 is more sensitive.
