[Boatanchors] BBOD's are really reliable (sic)

Collins used brown bodied paper capacitors in a number
of receivers from the early 1950s. They look just
like the black ones, even have the color coded
stripes. But, they definitely have brown bodies.
Also, the larger values (like .33 mfd and .47 mfd)
have red colored bodies.
Collins also used a lot of tubular capacitors in the
0.1 mfd value that look like resistors from the 1930s.
Those are problematic as well. Those have the wire
leads wrapped around the body of the capacitor about
0.1 inches from each end. These capacitors are hollow
(look like pieces of drinking straws). I find them
mostly in the 75A2 receivers. In the 75A3 receivers
they usually are the "brown" beauty types. However,
every 75A2 that I have worked on also has a number of
the "brown beauty" type of capacitors.
I had to replace a number of "brown beauties" and the
tubular type in my Collins 51J2 which is the same
"vintage" as the 75A2 receivers.
In the 75A4 Collins went to the "black beauty" types.
Those definitely need replacing as do several mica
types used in coupling between certain r.f. and i.f.
stages.

I've never heard of a Brown Beauty tubular capacitor.
However, my recommendation has always been and remains
that all Black Beauties should be replaced out of hand
(treated as wolves are).
