It is completely on topic. Alot of us BA'ers actually use our radio's on AM :->>
The bands have been in terrible condition, poor propagation, few signals. On 40 meters, there are some guys that do AM on 7290 plus or minus a few Kcs during the day. I often hear them on the weekends. On 75 meters, the AM window is 3880 to 3890 plus or minus a few. Evens are pretty much the time 75 has activity. I've done a little 160 meter AM but I understand there are quite a few guys down there. On 20 meters, I've heard some guys on 20 AM around 14.280 or thereabouts, occasionally.
There are all sorts of 75 meter AM nets going on. I can only recall a few. Electric Radio Magazine has a full list of AM nets. There is a First Wednesday Night AM net sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association, any AM rig happily accepted, 3880 or 3885 depending on conditions. This is an incredible net with stations all over the country checking in as net control shifts from the east coast to the central area, to the west coast. Check the CCA reflector for info collinsradio.org
AM International sponsors a regular weekly net on 75 AM in the evenings, I don't have dates or times here in front of me at work.
I gotta tell you though the First Wednesday Night AM net, is the most exciting of all for me. Typically it starts around 6:30 pm Central, and for an hour, a 'tall ship' East Coast AM station is net control, taking all comers. I usually try to check in from Minnesota if propagation is good. Then around 7:30 PM net control shifts to the central area where another tall ship takes over. Then at 8:30 PM net control again shifts west to the moutains or west coast. I haven't had much luck hearing stations out that a-way. You hear every kind of AM transmitter there is from big mombo Collins KW-1's to little Heathkit DX-60's, and everything in between. Its a real treat to listen in.
I remember last fall or last spring 75 meter AM was hot to trot in the late evenings, with may East to West Coast QSO's taking place, around 11 pm or midnight.
