John,
I've had good results with the plastic that is used for
packaging/protection around toys and electronics.
Some of it is formed and to small, batteries etc, but some of it comes in
good size sheets, like the window in a box with a cheap toy inside. Look
for something with the clarity and thickness you need.
It varies in both.
