Joe,

BC-638-A is a crystal controlled frequency meter (AKA signal generator) used 
to spot tune the BC-639-(*) receiver.  Covers 100-156 MC.  Part of numerious 
fighter control and DF sets utilizing BC-639 and BC-640 (transmitter).  Circa 
early '43.  Often found with dual nomenclature tags (US and British).
