Sandy mentioned using partially discharged 9 volt batteries (which BTW are
not fully discharged until the terminal voltage hits 4.5 volts, same as
LeClanche). You can also turn new 9 volt units into 6 volt ones suitable for bias (no
appreciable current) applications by opening the bottom crimp and removing
and reversing any one of the six cells. Close the crimp and mark it 6V on both
sides. Connectors are readily available, and plus two unmodified ones would
get you 24 volts. Or alternatively but a little more trouble would be to
replace three of the cells with brass rod, mark it 4.5 V plus two unmodified units
makes exactly 22.5 volts. I used the former method to replace the -4.5 volt
portions of the BA-41 in BC-620/659 after confiming that the audio stage was
happy with even 7 volts on the bias line.
