I agree. I used to do that and had some very unpleasnat surprises! However,
I've recently seen some equipment recapped by a local OT. He just cuts the
original lead as closely as possible to the terminal, lays the lead of the new
component on top, and solders. This provides an even neater appearance than the
'quig'.
Of course, everyone has read the 'Handbook' statement that you should "never
depend on solder for the mechanical strength of the joint". I say -- at least
for small components like resistors and bypass capacitors: Humbug!
As long as the component is not vibrating, there is no danger in depending on
solder. Maybe if the radio is intended for operation in an off-road vehicle
there might be problems, but even in this case it only matters if the component
is massive and the leads are long.
