Try a furniture manufacturer that press-seals plastic veneers to chip-board. one 
such brand of veneer in Australia is Formica. Comes in many colours, including 
black,if you want something to look and act like ebonite. The veneer is about 1/16" 
to 3/32" - so, get two layers pressed together.
