Dave,

You're correct of course (cathode end banded) and referring to a diode by 
Anode end or Cathode end is more common in the literature than Positive or 
Negative end.  But George is also correct.  To forward bias a diode, you put the 
positive supply source (including ohmmeter leads) on the anode and the negative 
on the cathode (and I'll add because I mentioned ohmmeters that with most VOM's 
EXCEPT for the Simpson 260, the positive ohmmeter lead is the negative volt 
and MA lead).
