Hi Ken and list,
Yes I also experienced that problem. You have to be careful also
with the rack mount version as well. At first I thought well the thing
is in a cabinet "of sorts", but the real case is still needed also.
My solution was to come up with a Junker rig with a good cabinet,
and putting finger stock on the cabinet to make contact with the
front panel. that cured most of the harmonic problems.
However as you stated the real reducer is to insure the cover for
the 6AG7 cage is in place, cleans up the signal and makes things
work a lot better.
