The HQ-180 is fixed! Thank you to all of you for the help and encouragement.
After finding and repairing several low voltage conditions and rechecking
ALL tube voltages and resistances, it seemed to perk up a bit. So once again
did the alignment series. Boy did the right votages make a difference in the
60kc set up. It was easy. Did all the IF setups and also the osc and Rf
setups. Also found the bad T-1 thing.
I took a que from Glen Zook and used a TV balun and had a short run of coax
that connected to my 80 meter dipole.
After the realignment, I tuned around the broadcast bands and was amazed at
how many stations I heard. Switched up to band 5, 20 meters, and heard quite
a few stations there also.
Imagine my suprise when I noticed I had failed to reconnect the antenna to
the short piece of coax that ran to th TV balun.
When the antenna was connected, I thought the darn thing would jump off the
table. Guys, it is HOT. Thank you again for helping me get the old girl
perking.
With what I learned on the 180, I think I will tackle the HQ-170 again as it
really never was all that great above 40 meters. John
