[Boatanchors] are all 6550's created equal?

Eugene:

FWIW, I'm using a pair of Svetlana SV6650s in my 100V,
and they work like a charm (I don't know if you can
get them anymore). I can't speak to the Tung-Sol
"reissue" tubes on eBay, but I can say that spending
big bux for NOS Tung-Sols would be a waste, IMO. As
with anything else, the real issue is with the quality
of the particular tube manufacturer. A 6550 should be
a 6550 no matter who makes it, but we all know that's
not always the case. When in doubt, go with a
personal referral if you can get one (there's a
Central Electronics mailing list on qth.net; you might
go there for more information, opinions and
referrals). OTOH, you can try 6550s made by various
manufacturers and find a good pair, probably for less
than if you bought a pair of "real" Tung-Sols (leave
the "real" Tung-Sols for the audiophools). Anyway, if
it were me, I'd try the Russian tubes. BTW, I heard
somewhere that you have to be careful of the tube
envelope size (height) in the 100V, to be sure that
the tubes will clear the cage cover. I'm not sure if
that's true, it's just a recollection rattling around
in the back of my brain along with a bunch of other
junk.
