Well, everyone should be aware that eBay does not penalize anyone for
ending an auction early other than the possible loss of the listing fees. 
So,
put it up for auction with no reserve and just do not let it go all the way 
to
the end unless you like the way the bidding is going.....

One of two thing likely happened: someone said 'look, no bids, you'd
better take my offer of <lower amount>' or someone said 'I'll give you
<larger amount> for it if you pull the auction and agree to hold it
for me x number of days so I can arrange shipment. If you're someone
not used to the ebay thing or not fully aware of values (their opening
bid would seem to indicate at least some reasearch), either one could
seem like a good idea.

I bet there are a lot of surprised/p.o.'d folks out there right now
who were hoping it would get no bids so they could either snipe it or
make a lower offer...
