HI Larry,
    thi(S) happens, usually when there's no load on the 600 ohm winding of
the output xfmr.
    Yes, taking it from the diode load to an external amp gives super good
audio, no particular difficulties, it's high impedance, feed it into a
phono or aux. jack on an amp.  Best way to go if you want nice qual.

    Since they do go bad, an original replacement is a bit hard to find,
but any output xfmr for a single 6V6, abt 5 to 8k I thnk, will work, AES,
etc, have them.
