This is also known as "resistance soldering" .  It has been around for 
awhile in the brass modelling community. Some units available from Micro 
Mark tools.  An interesting website

Resistance soldering depends on passing a high current through and between 
the parts being soldered - as opposed to passing the current through a 
soldering tip as in the old Weller soldering guns.  The voltages involved ( 
around 6 volts) can be enough to damage some solid state logic but should 
not be fearsome to tube boatanchor projects.
