[Boatanchors] SSTR 5, RS 1 and the AN/GRC-109 set

The early version of the GRC 109 was the RS 1 set, made for the CIA in
the post WW II era. The RS 1 set was militarized by adding the connector
for the AN/GRC 71 code burst transmitter.

You might inquire on the armyradio net and the spy radio net if anybody
has an extra receiver.

The late WW II set was the SSTR 5 set made up the SST5 transmitter and
SSR 5 receivers. The SSR 5 receivers were also sold in kit form, post WW
II as the "Famous Lucy" receiver for $19.95. These show up from time to
time, usually costing about $100.00

There are only four of the SST5 transmitter still in existence, three in
the USA and one in Russia. The SST 5 transmitter used two 3S4 tubes in
parallel. I built a reproduction of the set and had it tested by a
friend in Bend, Oregon. It got all they way to southern California from
Bend, Oregon on a half watt.

Subject: [Boatanchors] WTB: receiver for GRC-109 (?) set

I am looking for the matching receiver to a set of HF spy radios that
were used in late WW II and Viet Nam era. Not really sure of the
nomenclature, but they are built into cast aluminum boxes , maybe 6" X
8" X 10" , with waterproof covers held down by thumbscrews. Usually
black. FAIR Radio sold a lot of the stuff a few years ago. The receiver
uses 3V filament tubes, like the 3S4 and the 1T4. I have the matching
transmitter, and the tripod seat w / hand-crank generator. Just like to
find the receiver to complete the full set. This list has been a great
source of help over the years. I am willing to bet that there are
people out there who know exactly what I am talking about.

Thanks for any input.
