Hi fellas,
While there is no standard for S-meter calibration, manufacturers generally
accept that each S-point is equivalent to about 6 dB. So, to go from S6 to S7,
all other things being equal, you need to increase tx power by 4x. In the
example you have quoted, to go from S4 to S9, that's 5 steps, ie, about
30 dB; that corresponds to increasing your tx power by 1000x, ie, from
1 W to 1 kW.

BTW fellas, there were four tails on that message - and I pay for downloads -
please, can we be a bit more considerate?

The 4x power to double signal strength that I was referring to was the
power output of the transmitter or linear.. In other words, if I want
to double the S meter reading on the other guys receiver from, say, S 4
to about S 9, and I am running 100 watts .... then I generally need to
go to 400 watts to get double that reading on his S meter.
