The answer depends almost completely on which amplifier you're talking about. 
 My homebrew 813's require less than 15A @ 110v and therefore run off 110v 
just fine.  When building the amp, there was no hv xfmr available in my junk box 
with a 220v primary, I went with what I had and there have been no issues.

My old Henry 3K would require over 30A @ 110v and therefore doesn't even 
offer the option of running on 110v.  220v only!

So George, to answer your question, we'd have to know what amp you're 
running.  But, generally, for small amps 110v is fine.  For legal limit amps, go with 
220v.
