Steve,

Most (if not all) of the military SSB and ISB transmitters that do what's 
called "compatible AM" do it by reinjecting carrier after the balanced modulator. 
 You'd have to derate the output so that you don't exceed the plate 
dissipation.  '65 convertibles are another matter, though.  :-)
