GM - as a recently retired merchant marine radio officer (having "swallowed
the anchor" as they say)
to the lad with the Furuno LC-80 set -- Furuno is a very popular and
well-respected manufacturer
of merchant marine electronics equipment. I have sailed on recent ships
using Furuno HF, satellite,
RTTY, etc. gear. I would suspect that they have a website and might be able
to assist with
instructions. If you live near a significant seaport (notice you're a VE3 so
that might be iffy) try
contactiing one of the port electronics shops that do ship repair or try a
shipyard. They will have
manuals for it that they often let you Xerox.
Loran-C (100 khz area) took the place of the older (WWII vintage) Loran-A
(160m area) so has
much longer range (considering they use power that knocks the knobs off your
receiver). It is still
used extensively today and there is global coverage of the signals. For
audio all you will get is the
pulse repitition rate in the phones. You will need to get a nautical chart
of your area (or closeby)
to find the "chain numbers" and tuning data. Other than that, its almost
automatic. Especially if your
model give readout in latitude/longitude (as opposed to time differentrials,
like the older modes and
models).
