[Boatanchors] BC-342N Xtal Filter, anybody have one?

What the phasing control does is balance a bridge circuit one leg of 
which is the capacitance of the crystal holder.  So if you are seeeing 
it null everything out, then it seems that you are correct that the 
crystal is not passing anything.  One possibility is that the crystal is 
the incorrect one, having a resonant frequency far from the IF.  You can 
check the crystal with a signal generator and some kind of detector.  Or 
the IF could be misaligned away from the crystal frequency.  Or, as you 
suggest, maybe the crystal is just bad.
