Also, one, or more, rotor plates (sometimes stator
plates but more often rotor plates) gets bent so that
it shorts out and "kills" the circuit.  I have seen
little "dings" on these plates that are very hard to
see that also short things out.  These happen more on
the stator plates since one on a rotor plate would
make for an intermittent unless on the edge that is at
the minimum capacitance end.
