Didn't those rigs use differential keying, where the VFO would key on first,
followed by the PA? Then the PA would key off, followed by the VFO?

One of the two tubes on the deck was used for what they called the
"keyer" as Dee describes. However, the 2nd tube, was used as bias
rectifier to deliver negative voltage to both the "keyer" and also
provide a more "regulated/constant" bias voltage for the 1614 modulator
tubes.
